Marketplace

What is an Online Marketplace?

In 1994, a young American, Jeff Bezos, set up an online bookstore and, without knowing it, laid the foundations for the world's first marketplace, Amazon.

Today, the company's profits are estimated at tens of billions of dollars and its founder is recognised as the richest man in the world. And all thanks to selling consumer goods on a giant internet platform.

An online marketplace is a website or app that helps sellers and potential buyers find each other online. It's a place where thousands of customers go every day because they find it convenient to shop in one place with a variety of stores.

In simple terms, a marketplace is a trading platform where goods or services are sold by different suppliers. The marketplace is similar to a hypermarket: there are different sellers in one place, and buyers can shop in different stores within the same building.

In terms of business models, there are three options for marketplaces:

The first is a meeting place for individuals, some of whom are seeking, while others are offering goods and services (c2c model). An example from the service industry is the world-famous Airbnb rental service.

The second are sites where companies offer their products to individuals (b2c model). Examples include Amazon, Lamoda, Aliexpress and Skyscanner.

The third is a meeting place for businesses (b2b model), for example, All.biz.

In terms of assortment, there are three types of marketplace.

Vertical. Offer products from one or more related product categories. For example, cosmetics, hygiene products and household chemicals.

Horizontal. They work with a wide range of goods, grouped according to some criteria. For example, presenting a wide range of handmade goods.

Global. Global platforms offer the widest range of non-food and food products (food, clothing, books, household appliances, etc.). The most famous are Amazon, Walmart, Alibaba / Taobao / Tmall...

Most sites operate on a commission basis, taking a percentage of the cost of products sold, and may also offer paid advertising.

Marketplaces are becoming increasingly popular with both buyers and sellers. The former can buy everything they need in one place. The latter do not have to worry about marketing, communicating with customers, delivery service and other organisational issues.

Many consumers don't start with Google or retail websites when they want to buy products, but with marketplaces.

Marketplaces are a great tool for new brands. Nothing on Instagram will give you the same initial sales volume as these platforms. Even unknown brands come here and "shoot", and people start to recognise them immediately. The mechanism of operation is simple - marketplaces immediately offer all new products to users and promote them by increasing their rating!

Why should any merchant pay attention to marketplaces?

– Constant flow of the target audience due to the popularity of the trading platform;
– The ability to expand the geography of sales;
– Reduced advertising costs;
– Quick start;
– No need to create and promote the resource yourself.

The largest marketplaces generate 50% of global online retail sales, according to a report by the American Internet Retailer Group.

Today, shoppers trust marketplaces more than online stores because they work with trusted suppliers, have their own pickup points and call centres, and deliver goods on a postpaid basis.

At the end of the day, consumers benefit from marketplaces, which is why they are not afraid of antitrust laws.

Why is it profitable for companies to work with marketplaces? Advantages of marketplaces:

No need to spend money on marketing and advertising. The marketplace is interested in attracting customers as it earns commission on sales.

No need to spend time and money creating a website. It is long and expensive to build an online store from scratch. It will cost at least $10,000 and take at least two months.

Customer service and delivery. Marketplaces have their own. So these issues will not even affect you.

No need to hire additional staff. To maintain your site, you will need at least a content manager, a programmer and an account manager.

Marketplaces have a unique format where everyone benefits from the price - manufacturers, customers and the marketplace. Everybody makes money and thanks to this they develop very fast.

The only ones who will suffer will be intermediaries, distributors who have made money out of nothing, and online shop owners who haven't had time to change and continue to resell someone else's product instead of producing their own under their own brand.

Soon, all the big online stores that now have a lot of traffic and a lot of sales, but do not switch to the marketplace format, will regret it in the near future. They will realise that it is too late and that Alibaba, Walmart and Amazon have completely taken over the market with Taobao.

Hurry up to join the right marketplaces in time - increase sales, attract new customers and make your product a hit.

Harness the power of marketplaces - earn and invest wisely!
